Have you ever really thought about how you would like to live the rest of your life?
Most of us plan vacations, holidays, home projects, and family celebrations. Yet when it comes to the years ahead, it is easy to put off making a plan. We tell ourselves we will figure it out when the time comes.
But what happens if the time comes suddenly?
A fall, an illness, or another unexpected change can leave you and your family trying to make important decisions during a crisis. Instead of choosing the place that feels right, you may find yourself asking a very different question: Who has room?
Many people assume that moving to a 55+ or independent living community means they have found their final home. But many communities are designed around a single level of care. When more care is needed, residents can suddenly find themselves facing another move—leaving the home, routines, friendships, and familiar surroundings they have come to depend on, at the very moment they need stability most.
That can mean leaving familiar surroundings, saying goodbye to friends, and starting over somewhere new at the very time you may not be feeling your best.
That has always troubled me.
Kensington Gardens was created around a simple idea: make a plan while the choices are still yours.
“Aging in place” sounds simple, but the reality can be very different. As needs increase, it can mean managing caregiver agencies, dealing with missed shifts or inconsistent care, and allowing a revolving door of caregivers—often strangers—into your home and among your personal belongings.
The real question is: when your needs change, does your community change with you, or are you left to manage it alone?
At Kensington Gardens, care is designed to change as you do. Members have the option for In-Home Care provided in their Villa Suites, 24-hour assisted care in our on-property Adult Family Home, and respite care without leaving the campus or the people they know. Our care managers can even coordinate Home-Health services if the need arises.
Planning ahead means you can continue traveling, snow birding, and living life on your own terms. At the same time, you can build friendships and become part of a community where people know you, care about you, and will be there if life changes.
My husband, Mark, and I believe in this concept so deeply that we live here ourselves. In fact, we moved away once—and then we moved back.
While living in our own home, I began to experience firsthand something I had often shared with others: without regular connection and community, your world can slowly grow smaller. For me, life had begun to revolve around watching television and doing the same things each day.
I missed the laughter. I missed having people nearby. I missed being part of something. So we sold our home and returned to Kensington Gardens because we wanted connection, activity, friendship, and fun in our lives.
The ladies get together on Mondays, and the men gather on Tuesdays. We have strength training, Tai Chi, happy hour, and movie night. We also attend events and enjoy outings together.
Sometimes, though, the best moments are not the planned ones. They are the conversations in the great room, the laughter over dinner, or simply knowing there is someone nearby who is happy to see you.
Many of our staff members have been with us for more than a decade. They are not strangers passing through. They know us, and we know them. That familiarity and continuity mean more than I can put into words.
Kensington Gardens attracts kind, interesting, and fun-loving people who believe life is meant to be enjoyed and who genuinely enjoy one another. It is a warm and welcoming community where friendship, laughter, and purpose are part of everyday life.
I am not suggesting that everyone should make the same choice Mark and I made. I am simply encouraging you to think about these questions while the answers are still yours to give:
Do not wait for a crisis to make the plan.
Make a plan for the life you want, and then go live it.
When is the right time to move to a community like this?
Earlier than most people think. We often hear from families in crisis asking one question: “Do you have room?” By then, the choice is often based on who has space, not where you truly want to live. Plan while you can choose—so when a crisis comes, your community is already there to help.
What happens if I need more care later?
At Kensington Gardens, care levels are available on the same campus, so a change in needs does not automatically mean a change in address. Ask any community you tour to name, in writing, the point at which you would be asked to move.
Can I still travel or spend winters somewhere else?
Yes. Members travel, snowbird, and keep their own schedules. Planning ahead is about having a home base and a community to return to, not about giving up the way you like to spend your year.
What is the difference between a 55+ community and a Personalized Care Resort Community?
A 55+s or independent living community is generally built around one level of service. A Personalized Care Resort Community is built so that care can change on site as needs change, which is the difference between one move and two.
How do I start this conversation with my family?
Start with what you want rather than what you fear. Tell them where you would like to live, who you want nearby, and what you still want to do. Then tour a community together so the conversation has something concrete behind it.
If you would like to see what that life can look like, Schedule a Tour and experience Kensington Gardens for yourself.
Your future should not be left to chance.
